This work aims to demonstrate the application of the FMECA method in the identification and characterization of failure modes and their effects on an extruder machine used in the manufacture of wires. The equipment's vacuum system was evaluated, and different failure modes were characterized in the piping components, air pump and valve. For each failure mode, its priority risk number (PRN) was determined through the combined analysis of the factors occurrence, severity and failure detection. From the analysis of the PRN, the maintenance strategy of the equipment was developed where actions were proposed to increase the failure detection capacity, reduction of frequency and severity of failures, and consequent reduction of PRN values. The improvements proposals elaborate are of low cost and high feasibility of implementation in a short time, because is not necessary make major changes in the manufacturing processes structure. The FMECA tool showed be great utility to the processes improvement.
